He was probably born in\u00a0<a title=\"Ferrara\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferrara\">Ferrara<\/a>\u00a0and spent the first part of his life there, likely studying with\u00a0<a title=\"Giovanni Gabrieli\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giovanni_Gabrieli\">Giovanni Gabrieli<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a title=\"Venice\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venice\">Venice<\/a>, which was nearby. He was one of the most inventive, influential and popular composers of the time, probably second only to\u00a0<a title=\"Claudio Monteverdi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claudio_Monteverdi\">Monteverdi<\/a>\u00a0in northern Italy. \u00a0His works were published throughout Italy, Germany and the\u00a0<a title=\"Low Countries\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Low_Countries\">Low Countries<\/a>, and continued to be reprinted long after his death.
